    Hi everyone,

I’m currently setting up a WooCommerce store for a client who wants to sell in both French and English, but they don’t want to use WPML due to performance concerns and licensing costs.

I’ve looked into Polylang and TranslatePress, but I’m not sure which one integrates best with WooCommerce product pages, especially for things like variable products and SEO.

    My main questions are:

Which plugin do you recommend for handling bilingual product descriptions in WooCommerce?
Does your recommended setup support URL translation, product slugs, and SEO meta fields?

Any known limitations when using Polylang or TranslatePress with WooCommerce?

I’d really appreciate feedback from anyone who’s done this in a production store. Bonus points if you can share any tips on performance or compatibility with major themes like Astra or GeneratePress.

    Thanks in advance!

If your client wants a bilingual store without the cost of WPML, Polylang Pro is usually the cleanest option for WooCommerce. It handles product translations well, including variable products, and it keeps things fairly light compared to some of the heavier multilingual plugins.

URL translation, product slugs, and SEO meta fields are supported as long as you use the Polylang WooCommerce add on. That part is important because the free version alone is not enough for full shop compatibility.

TranslatePress is easier to set up since you translate on the front end, but it can feel slower with larger catalogs and it is not as strong for product based SEO. Polylang tends to scale better for stores that have many products or categories.

For performance, caching helps a lot. Astra and GeneratePress both work well out of the box. Just make sure your product permalinks are regenerated after setting up both languages.

If you only need two languages and want good SEO control, Polylang with the WooCommerce add on is a solid choice.
